Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former IMF chief tipped to become French president before a New York hotel maid accused him of sexual assault in 2011, goes on trial in France on Monday in a separate case of alleged pimping.

Strauss-Kahn, 65, who settled a U.S. civil case with chambermaid Nafissatou Diallo after criminal charges were dropped, risks as much as 10 years in jail and a fine of up to 1.5 million euros ($1.7 million) if convicted in the French trial.

Investigating magistrates who sent Strauss-Kahn to trial with 13 others argue he knew he was dealing with prostitutes when taking part in sex parties in Paris, Lille and Washington from 2008 to 2011, a judicial source told Reuters.

He is charged with “pimping with aggravating circumstances”.

Defence lawyers for Strauss-Kahn have flatly dismissed those allegations, arguing he never made a secret of his penchant for swinger parties but was unaware the women present were prostitutes and did not play any pivotal organizational role.

Defence lawyer Richard Malka said by telephone he had nothing to add ahead of the opening of the trial in the northern city of Lille. The affair has come to be known as the Carlton Affair, named after the Lille hotel at the center of a sex ring.

Strauss-Kahn, who starred as finance minister in a boom-time Socialist government in the late 1990s, became one of the world’s most influential decision-makers in 2007 as head of the International Monetary Fund, a public lender that plays a central role worldwide in the rescue of failing economies.

Cicero police are searching for more victims of sexual assault after a church employee allegedly engaged in sexual acts and sexual conduct with several juveniles.

Juan David Ferreras, who was employed at Sonido De Alabanza Church in Cicero, is accused of engaging in sexual acts with at least six juvenile victims between 9 and 17 years old while he worked as a youth minister, photographer and teacher at the church, police said.

Police believe the sexual acts took place over the last six years at numerous locations including the church, Ferreras’ apartment and at two camps where he ran youth retreats for Sonido De Alabanza Church, according to Deputy Supt. Jose Gonzalez.

“He had a role of authority within the church,” Gonzalez said. “He gained the trust of young boys, at the time between the ages of 9 to 17 years old, and again then used this position of authority to then perform these acts on these boys.”

A company handling the church’s media relations, however, claims Ferreras was employed as a secretary and had no other job responsibilities.

“The Sonido de Alabanza church leadership and its pastors are fully cooperating with Cicero authorizes in the investigation of a former employee charged with allegedly abusing juveniles,” Pastor Esdras Ferreras said in a statement, “and we will pray for repentance and healing as Jesus commands us.”

Ferreras, 43, of the 5700 block of West 35th Street, was charged with felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse, two counts of criminal sexual assault, sexual exploitation of a child, indecent solicitation of a child, four counts of distribution of harmful material, and battery following a criminal sexual abuse investigation, according to authorities.

Supt. Bernard Harrison said police are reaching out to identify more victims and are asking individuals who may have experienced sexual assault involving Ferreras to contact the Cicero Police Department.

Gonzalez said information given to police indicates there are two or three more victims that have not come forward, and police believe there may be more.

“It’s not going to be easy for these boys to come forward on their own,” Gonzalez said. “I give credit to these young boys that did come forward to tell their story, again it’s not easy, but they did. If there’s other people out there that need our help we’re asking that they come forward and call us and we’ll absolutely do everything that we can.”

As the investigation continues, Harrison asked that parents talk to their sons and daughters about the incident to see if their child may have been victimized.

“We all know that down the road these assaults on young children carry into the psyche throughout their adult years and we’d like to put a stop to that right now and help these kids get some help before they get further victimized,” Harrison said.

Anyone with information or questions on the incident can call Gonzalez at (708) 652-2130 ext. 348.

Colonel Matthew Moten

Colonel Matthew Moten
The United States Military Academy has reprimanded and removed one of its officials after an investigation showed he sexually harassed women in his chain of command.

Colonel Matthew Moten, the head of West Point’s history department, had been accused of attempting to kiss and touch female subordinates and wives of subordinate officers, Army Times reported.

Following a two-month investigation into the case, Moten was formally reprimanded in August, and voluntarily resigned from his post without an honorary general’s star. Customarily, retiring department heads are given an honorary general’s star.

According to Lt. Col. Webster Wright, a spokesman for the US Army Military Academy at West Point, Moten does not face criminal charges, but his actions, as Wright said, were “misconduct.”

Wright said the investigation began after it transpired that Moten behaved inappropriately in the school’s sensing sessions and again during sexual assault and harassment response training.

His removal is the third one during recent months which is associated with misconduct at the academy.

According to a recent Defense Department, the number of sexual assaults occurred last year in the US military was 26,000, compared to 19,000 in fiscal year 2011.

Dean Henderson, an American author and columnist at Veterans Today, believes generals and people at the top in the US military are to blame for the rising sexual assault rate.

A new study has found that US failure to deal with sexual assaults in the military costs the country billions of dollars annually.

Pentagon report shows big jump in sex crimes in military

07 May 2013 The Obama administration expressed outrage about a recent high-profile Air Force groping scandal on Tuesday as the Pentagon released a study estimating that the number of sex crimes involving military personnel soared 37 percent last year. The annual Pentagon report, which estimated there were 26,000 sex crimes ranging rape to abusive sexual contact in 2012, came a day after the Air Force removed the officer in charge of its anti-sexual assault office for allegedly groping a civilian in a suburban parking lot near the Pentagon. The Pentagon study found there were 3,374 reported cases of sexual assault in 2012, up nearly 200 from the 3,192 reported in 2011.

An indictment filed with the al-Quds (Jerusalem) District Court said the suspect began molesting the victims, ages 12 -14, more than 10 years ago.”

A prominent Israeli rabbi has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting his three teenage daughters for more than 10 years.

The rabbi, who has not yet been publicly named, is reportedly being charged with multiple accounts of sexual assault and invasion of privacy, Israel’s Ynet news website reported on Wednesday.

He was arrested 10 days ago but has been remanded in custody for an additional two days.

An indictment filed with the al-Quds (Jerusalem) District Court said the suspect began molesting the victims, ages 12 -14, more than 10 years ago.

The document said the rabbi sexually abused one of the elder daughters for two years, despite her pleas.

He told the girl they could sleep naked together and also placed a video camera in her room and watched her as she undressed and showered.

The suspect’s daughters are expected to testify against him in court.

Human Rights Watch to publish report that shows some victims experience fresh trauma from police neglect in rape cases

Police in Washington DC frequently fail to investigate reports of rape, and treat victims so dismissively at times, that they experience fresh trauma while the chances of the perpetrator being caught are undermined, according to a comprehensive report due out next week.

Campaign group Human Rights Watch is expected to uncover “disturbing evidence of police failure” in a 200-plus page report after a two-year investigation into law enforcement practices in the US capital.

But although shocking, the situation in Washington is far from isolated. There are widespread examples across the US of the police routinely neglecting crimes of sexual violence and refusing to believe victims.

“This is a national crisis requiring federal action. We need a paradigm shift in police culture, because rapes and sexual assaults are being swept under the rug, and too many victims are being bullied,” said Carol Tracy of the Women’s Law Project, a legal advocacy group that specialises in sexual violence cases.

Human Rights Watch began looking into the situation in Washington after discovering evidence that the city’s Metropolitan police department (MPD) were refusing even to document a significant number of reports of sexual assaults coming in from the central hospital where victims are treated.

Full details and statistics will be disclosed by HRW in its final report, due to be published on 24 January.
