Pulaski, New York may be a small town of just 2,400 residents, but it has now added itself to the list of more than 130 communities across the country that have banned the addition of fluoride to their water supply.
While not all fluoride is bad, the type that has been promoted by dentistry and added to our water and food supply beginning in the 1940s certainly is.
Calcium fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral, while its synthetic counterpart, sodium fluoride (silicofluoride), is an industrial-grade hazardous waste material made during the production of fertilizer. Its past history includes patented use as rat poison and insecticide.
There are many blind- and double-blind studies that show sodium fluoride has a cumulative effect on the human body leading to allergies, gastrointestinal disorders, bone weakening, cancer, and neurological problems, while actually damaging tooth enamel if consumed in high enough quantities.
The chart below illustrates that dental fluorosis rates have only risen over the 60 years since its addition to dental products, food and water.

Could you tell us which fluorine compounds are “not all . . . bad”? If it involves human exposure or consumption, it is ALL bad. If you’re talking about etching glass then I guess it’s not “bad” per se — unless you’re the poor slob being exposed to the nasty stuff while etching the glass. I would guess that the fluorine compounds end up in the sewer which ends up in the environment which is . . . yep, BAD.
Fluorine compounds are produced as a by-product of aluminum manufacturing, nuclear weapons production, as well as from the scrubber stacks of phosphate fertilizer plants. It’s all BAD.
One of things few people realize is how pervasive fluorine compounds are in our food and beverages as well. Even if you are fortunate enough to live in a town without fluoridated water you still get plenty of the nasty stuff if you drink sodas, grape juice/wine, and tea. Same goes for if you eat processed chicken or beef, potatoes, grapes, and raisins. Most fast food. Most prepared entrees in the supermarket.
Ever wonder why there are so many pain relievers advertised on TV for middle-aged folks with achy joints? It’s skeletal fluorosis misdiagnosed as osteoarthritis. The people of the U.S. have poisoned for decades and it’s the elephant in the living room. Wake up, people!
Yikes. My dentist has me on this.
